Woodstock Little Theatre is an award winning, live theatre that has been providing professional quality theatre in our community for over 50 years. The Market Centre Building
the theatre is housed in was constructed in July 1895, 102 years later, in the summer of 1997, the Woodstock Little Theatre began its first summer season with Nunsense. The Woodstock Little Theatre seats 250 people comfortably. The theatre floor is "raked", meaning everyone can see the stage without having to look between the heads of patrons in front. With excellent sound levels.
The Market Centre Building traditionally brought people together to do their weekly shopping, now brings people together to listen to good concerts and be entertained by good theatre. Many transformations were made before the Market Building  was ready for a modern theatre. The idea was to keep the actual structure and interior designs as they were when they were built just adding the seating, stage etc. Upon entering the front door you immediately see the elegant stairway up to the theatre seating. Down the stairs and to the left is a great multi-purpose room, the washrooms, the kitchen, the green room, and large change rooms for our performers. Theatre Woodstock has a full service kitchen for special events, as well theatre staff can serve hot and cold drinks to theatre patrons.. The Green Room is traditionally the rehearsal space for all performances. At any one time racks of clothes for the next performance can be seen lining the walls, and drawing or artist sketches of sets cover tables scattered about the room. At intermission patrons chat with friends and family, have a drink while waiting for the performances next act. The lounge area has posters of all past performances and awards won by Woodstock Little Theatre. If you've participated in any of the Woodstock Little Theatre shows, your name or picture might be on these walls. Office space and carpentry shops are also found near the lounge.

The Woodstock Art Gallery showcases historical and contemporary exhibitions including the largest collection of works by Post-Impressionist artist Florence Carlyle in its permanent collection. As well year round classes, juried art exhibits, a very popular monthly art film series, and art appreciation tours and programs.  The Woodstock Art Gallery was originally founded by the Oxford County Art Association as a Centennial project in 1967, it's Oxford County's only public art gallery. The Woodstock Art Gallery offers historical and contemporary exhibitions, adult and children's classes, a monthly film series offered in conjunction with the Toronto International Film Festival Group, tours and art appreciation programs.
In 1983, it was relocated from the downstairs of the Woodstock Library to the Neo-Georgian manse it's housed in today. Some of the works that have been exhibited at the Woodstock Art Gallery are, The Breast Drum Project a traveling exhibition featuring sculptures and sound installation that tells stories about women, who they are, what they do, how they live, think and feel. The Breast Drum Project was created by Ms. Marlene Hilton Moore from Toronto over a six year period and offers a comprehensive and intimate female narrative of women ranging from 27 to 93, from Newfoundland to the Yukon. Mary-Anne Murphy; Details in the Dust, an exhibit featuring recent charcoal and graphite works by Woodstock artist Mary-Anne Murphy. “Details in the Dust” is a figurative collection of dramatic representational work, created using classic drawing methods as well as the use of dust applications. Ms. Murphy explores the human form in high detail and from unique perspectives. The Disappearing Landscape, a group exhibition where each artist explores their world and its ever changing environments. Woodstock artist Cathy Groulx offers monumental paintings featuring the disappearing rural landscape throughout Oxford Count. Princeton artist Rita Milton’s abstract and emotive paintings focus on an inward exploration of the changes in her personal environment through self-awareness and growth. Photo Journalist Elliot Ferguson has documented throughout his global travels the changes on a global level offering viewers an opportunity to compare the disappearing landscapes of many third world countries through industrialization. Art Beat 2007: Speak Up this popular community exhibition offered a variety of theme-related student artworks from all age and grade levels. The focus of this exhibition was to reinforce the idea of the “arts” as a form of communication in which viewers can respond to the works intuitively, separate from technical aspects, breaking down the barriers of the arts and its elitist reputation. This annual project continues to strengthen the educational links within the community.

Born and raised in Norwich, Ross Butler, the artist and owner of  Ross Butler Studio was a direct descendant of the Famous Loyalist Colonel John Butler and a self-taught artist who made a lasting impression on the agricultural and art communities in Canada and the United States. Ross Butler works out of his studio that overlooks the Woodstock Town Square, creating amazing a gricultural art. In the 1930's Butler was commissioned by the Ontario government to paint "true types" of Canadian livestock breeds to be used for agricultural education and breeding purposes. Butler's theories of animal proportions significantly influenced agricultural scientists at the University of Guelph.
Butler's early portrait of the Springbank Snow Countess served as a model for the life-sized monument of this famous Holstein cow which identifies Oxford County as the "Dairy Capital" of Canada. Butler was also commissioned by the Percheron breeding association in the United States to sculpt true type models, which led to his work creating logo statues for Dawes Black Horse Ale. Butler a jersey breeder himself, was a founding father of the Oxford Jersey Club, the Oxford Historical and Museum Society, and the Central Unit, the first independent all breed artificial insemination facility for cattle in Canada.
Among his many accomplishments as an artist were the "butter" sculptures he created for the annual Canadian National Exhibition and Royal Agricultural Winter Fairs.
Ross Butler's remarkable achievements as an agricultural artist were recognized posthumously in June 1997 when he was inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame at the Agricultural Museum in Milton and into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in November 1997 at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.

Woodstock National Historic Museum constructed in 1853, once home to the fire hall, police station, council chambers and the Oscar Wilde-John A MacDonald theatre in the upper Grand Hall. The Woodstock National Historic Museum is an excellent adaptation of an Italianate design, the original round council table where you can still hear the echo of the gavel.
Mammoth creatures once roamed this area and they say mastodon bones can be found. Hear stories of the 1890 Benwell-Birchall murder trial, see the gun found in the swamp near Princeton. Offer a moment of silence as you take in the War exhibit. Experience the history of Woodstock. This house where the Woodstock National Historic Museum is now located was built by Capt. Drew who came here in 1832 as agent for Admiral Henry Vansittart, founder of Woodstock. Capt. Drew purchased land now included in the eastern section of Woodstock, Drew divided it into town lots and formed the nucleus of the Woodstock community. During the Rebellion of 1837-39 Capt. Drew led the Canadian force that destroyed the American steamer "Caroline", which was supplying William Lyon Mackenzie's supporters on Navy Island. This action almost precipitated war between Britain and the United States and several attempts were made on Drew's life. He returned to England in 1842 and resuming his naval career. Visit the Woodstock National Historic Museum to see memories of Capt. Drew and the house where Woodstock all began.

Woodstock Peace Lighthouse a ten story structure houses one of the largest collection of religious icons in the world in a landlocked location. Lighthouses are more than just a navigational marker, but a symbol of safety, familiarity and security of home and family. This world-class collection of 100 Byzantine style icons features the life of Christ and commemorates 1000 years of Christian heritage and culture. Many of these art treasures typical of Eastern Christendom were united by iconographers from the Orthodox world. The Woodstock Peace Lighthouse was originally planned to be built in Israel, it's now one of Woodstock’s unique treasures. View a lace pilgrimage, a picture Bible, old maps of Eastern Europe, an original stone from St. Peter’s home in Galilee, scale models of famous lighthouses, and paintings of South-western Ontario Lighthouses. Gift shop features small icons & a variety of related memorabilia. Gallery area accessible by elevator. 9th floor observatory provides panoramic view of Woodstock. Woodstock's Peace Lighthouse is an international place of pilgrimage. The ten storey gallery is home to the largest "icon" collection of its kind in the world. The icons depict the life of Christ. Also housed here is an original stone from the home of St. Peter in Galilee as well as a collection of ancient maps from the holy land.
The Woodstock Peace Lighthouse includes 99 colourful icons and logos depicting the life of Christ as portrayed in the Gospel. The Lighthouse is open to public tours, pilgrimage, and study groups who are interested in the Byzantine icon tradition and spirituality. Included are a collection of memorabilia, historical maps of Eastern Europe, logos, miniature lighthouses and a few paintings and drawings of lighthouses along Ontario’s southern coast.

Birtch Farms and Estate Winery is more than four generations of passion for the land, excellent soils and a gentle south-facing slope attracted McKay Birtch and his family to this farm in 1946. Birtch Farms was just that for several years, with the first apple tree being planted in 1956. One of the original apple trees is still there today, greeting you as you drive up the driveway. The current owner is the McKay's grandson and his wife Dyann who purchased it from McKay in 1978. From the beginning McKay encouraged folk from town to purchase produce fresh from his fertile fields. Bob and Dyann carried on with that tradition and have noticed a steady increase in the number of people visiting the farm.
Bob and Dyann planted new orchards and built new storage buildings all the while raising a young family of three boys. Now three young men, sons Josh, Matthew and Nathan are all involved with the farm in varying degrees. In 1993 Bob and Dyann made a decision to expand upon that interest of the visitors to Birtch Farms. A retail store was created in a portion of the barn and the first apple festival was hosted that fall, receiving rave reviews and becoming an annual event. Over the next several years it has become one of the region's most popular fall destinations. As well a site for school outings as a learning experience.
The festivities begin in September with the Annual Apple Festival, Their are many great things for parents and children to do. Thousands of people come each year to experience a great family farm weekend. Whether your kids enjoy some fun in our play area or you head out to our pick your own apple orchard and pumpkin patch, you could spend the whole day here.
October is activities month with the Pumpkin Festival a weekend of family fun with all the fall activities plus, Costume Contest, Pumpkin Treats, Pumpkin Games, Pick your own Pumpkins and Carved Pumpkin Display.
The latest venture for the Birtch Farms Estate Winery is their most ambitious undertaking yet. The Birtch family take pride in presenting the fruit of Ontario in a bottle. As well in October is the Local Flavours Festival this new festival created to celebrate food and wine. Birtch Farms offers a wide variety of fruit wines made from local Ontario produce. Wines currently available are, Apples n' Spice, Oak Aged McIntosh, Orchard Gold, Northern Spy, Royal Gala Blush, Black Currant Apple, Blueberry, Cranberry, Montmorency Cherry, Elderberry, Kiwi Strawberry, Peach, Pear, Plum, Raspberry, Raspberry,  Rhubarb, Rhubarb Strawberry and Strawberry. Including an array of ice style wines which include, Apple Ice, Apple Maple Ice, Blueberry Ice, Cherry Ice, Raspberry Ice and Strawberry Ice.

Design concepts for Pittock Dam were prepared in the Upper Thames Valley Conservation Report 1952 with the objectives of providing flood protection to downstream communities and improving base flows during the drier summer months. In 1961 engineering started considering designs that would best suit the situation in Woodstock. The present location was chosen over two smaller dams that were considered the Thames and Cedar Creek near Woodstock. Construction was started on the dam in 1964 and officially completed in 1967. The cost of the dam and land base at that time was close to $6 million. Present annual maintenance sits at a cost of about $40,000.
The Pittock Dam is designed for both flood control and flow augmentation purposes. The outflow from the dam is controlled by three main operating features:
Five large radial arm gates coarse control of flows from the dam. These gates are used mainly during the spring runoff period (March to April), as well as in the fall when the soil is likely to be frozen or saturated and runoff from snowmelt or rainfall is potentially high. Some gates are also left open in the winter when the water level in the reservoir is lower to make the winter ice cover as stable as possible.
A small slide gate valve provides fine control of outflow during the summer to provide small releases to downstream when often even less flow enters into the reservoir. The valve can also discharge cooler water from the bottom of the reservoir during the summer. The low setting of the gate allows the reservoir to be further lowered for maintenance purposes if required.
Steel stop logs provide some automatic control during the summer months when the reservoir level is at or close to its highest level, by allowing flow to spill over the logs when the water levels rise following summer storms. Some water level fluctuations may result.
By agreement with the Ministry of Environment a minimum volume of water is released downstream during the summer months. An annual operating cycle guideline was established within the original design intent for the dam and reservoir. The cycle indicates substantial fluctuations in water levels during the year. These changes provides optimum year round flood control capability to protect downstream communities without endangering the safe operation of the dam, and benefits water quality downstream during dry summer conditions.

Springbank Snow Countess Monument

Springbank Snow Countess Monument is a life size concrete statue was designed by Ross Butler to honour a record-setting milk producing Holstein Friesian cow.
Springbank Snow Countess Monument was erected on August 4, 1937. The "Snow Countess" was born on November 18, 1919 and died August 9, 1936. During her lifetime, she produced 9,062 pounds of butterfat, impressive at that time. The Countess died at age 17, shortly after her last calving, during a heat wave. Although her stall had been lined with ice, she was unable to survive temperatures averaging over 100 degrees F. She was buried on Dent farmland. It was erected by the Holstein Friesian Association of Canada on the Springbank Farm of T. R. Dent, owner of Snow Countess. The statue of the Springbank Snow Countess was made at a cost $4,000, at that time. The life-size statue weighed five tons, mounted on a base of granite. Recently moved to its new home at the northwest corner of Dundas and Springbank Avenues the Springbank Snow Countess proudly stands in honour of her accomplishments. The monument was restored in the spring of 2007 and designated a Municipal Heritage Site during a re-dedication ceremony on Aug. 4, 2007,exactly 70 years after the initial unveiling.

Nearly some four decades ago a wee little girl began to share fantastical stories about a mythical woman who spent her days in the heat of her tiny kitchen. Baked feverishly decadent delectable chocolate chip cookies. The wee little girl would often slip away from her family and spend happy times munching and crunching those incredible cookies. A sprinkling of love was often the main ingredient stirred into the batter as the wee little girl soon realized as sometimes she would arrive just in time to assist the elderly baker. Now this old woman who baked cookies did not go nameless. for she was to that wee little girl Grandma McLaire. The wee little girl would tell her family of how wonderful Grandma McLaire was and how good and comforting the cookies were. Her family often questioned her about the whereabouts of Grandma McLaire as they had never seen hide nor hair of her. The wee little girl was steadfast and she would not reveal the dwelling place of her beloved granny, but more importantly she didn't want to share her cookies. Time with Grandma McLaire was an enchanting time, as the wee little girl was engaged in the making of cookies she would be encouraged by the old woman that everything would be alright even with the arrival of her new brother. Grandma Mc Laire would sit with the wee little girl for endless time and the two of them would eat cookies till they could eat no more one should never eat beyond "eat no more" for the consequences could be horrendous. Little by little the wee little girl stopped visiting Grandma Mc Laire. She soon began to see her new brother as her friend and not her foe. The family noticed that the wee little girl didn't chatter on about her antics with her fictitious baker much. Until one day it was as if the elderly lady didn't even exist. When asked where Grandma McLaire went off too the wee little girl replied she's gone she blew up, she ate too many cookies.
This is the first story told by Kim Watson Story Teller Extraordinaire. It marked the beginning of a desire to let her imagination take hold and believe that within stories there was the possibility to make sense of the world around. She was three years old.

With six tours available to choose from, Woodstock introduces tourists to several aspects of historic Woodstock. Woodstock Choralaires is a community, volunteer and charitable organization, organized to entertain the residents and visitors of Woodstock and area. The Woodstock Choralaires provide entertainment for any fundraising-group or celebration upon request. In the past the Woodstock Choralaires have sung at cancer events, volunteer celebrations, Alzheimer events and many others. The Woodstock Choralaires were part of the Woodstock Library's Anniversary festivities. The Woodstock Choralaires also provides bursaries for the Annual Music Festival, and donate their time whenever and wherever their needed. The Choralaires are Woodstock Ambassadors' of Song and where excited about their involvement in the 2010 Woodstock Collegiate Institute's, The Pirates of Penzance In Concert.
Woodstock’s Ambassadors of Song”, as Woodstock city council would ultimately proclaim it, was launched in January of 1966 by Dr. Norman E. Burt-Gerrans, a physician and long time resident of Woodstock, Ontario. Six weeks after the first practice, its ten charter members climbed onto the stands to perform during a fashion show at Old St. Paul’s Church in Woodstock. When the audience called for an encore, the choir repeated “The 23rd Psalm”, at the time one of only two numbers in their repertoire.
The Woodstock Choralaires organization has evolved from its humble beginning to the accomplished choir of 60 plus performers it is today. Its members have made a joyful noise throughout North America and on several European tours for more than four decades, in churches, cathedrals, market squares, from Ontario Place to Vimy Ridge, to Notre Dame, Paris, to NATO air force hangars, to concert halls throughout central and rural Ontario. Membership is open to anyone, from coveralls to pinstripes. The only prerequisite is a commitment to and a love for singing. Generations of alumni continue to hum long after they have moved on. The makings for this fascinating and enduring choral tradition, is its legendary esprit de corps. Dr. Burt-Gerrans embodied it. Ron McNutt, who picked up the baton in 1983, shaped it. And Doug Shippey, a virtuoso in his own right and only its third Director, continues to inspire with his indomitable spirit. Since his appointment in 1996, Doug has taken this remarkable choir to new heights with his characteristic energy, his masterful precision, and his flair. Excellence can become a habit.

Event: Oh Canada! Hatters Date: May Contact: Location: Dundas StreetWoodstock Description: Oh Canada! Hatters places 1st in Victoria Day Parade,the Red Hot Flashers and the Red Hat Cowntesses of Woodstock, participated in the Annual Victoria Day Parade and were awarded first place in their division. Pulled by a 1929 Hudson, about 20 members walked alongside or rode on the float, singing and blowing bubbles in true Red Hatter fashion. The Red Hot Flashers is led by Queen Phyllis Allen and the Cowntesses by Queen Theresea Deserres. Brian Howard, husband of Flasher Ellen Howard, was the chauffeur who appropriately donned a red hat.

Most Woodstock residents remember the weekend of June 10 & 11, 2005 for its oppressive heat and humidity, however a privileged few of us will cherish it as a time of pure joy and wonder. The Kaleid music festival brought together five superb choirs from southern Ontario and an unbelievably talented and world-recognized acappella singing group, Rajaton, from Finland to share in an outpouring of song which, for a brief moment of time, putting Woodstock front and centre in the world of choral music. The 200 singers who participated in the Kaleid Festival and its workshops were transported far beyond the boundaries of merely superb singing and into an intensely spiritual and profoundly moving community experience of all that is beautiful in the world of music.
